Student Volunteering
Are you a student in high school or college and need some volunteer hours? Fill out our form below, and we will contact you soon to set-up a volunteer schedule. We will do our best to accommodate short-notice deadlines, but we schedule volunteer hours according to need and staff availability. Thank you for understanding!
To volunteer with us you must:
Be 14 years old or older. (Younger students needing hours can email Grace Guntharp at gguntharp@li.lib.ms.us to request hours).
Be able to listen and follow instructions.
Enjoy working with children.
Stay focused and calm during high-energy programs.
Provide your cell phone number or a parent/guardian’s cell phone number for schedule communication purposes.
Have your own transportation or reliable transportation from a parent/guardian to and from the library.
Inform the Youth Services Librarian as soon as possible if you cannot come on your assigned day/time.
During the school year, volunteers are typically scheduled to work 2-hour time slots once a week. Special tasks or programming may result in more hours per week, depending on staff needs and projects.
Typical tasks include:
prepping crafts and activities for children’s programs
testing and organizing art supplies
shelving books
shelf-reading specific sections
cleaning and tidying the Youth Services Department
assisting staff during a program
If you are a student fulfilling mandatory community service hours with a deadline for a school requirement, college application, or scholarship application, please fill out the form below.
If you are not fulfilling mandatory community service hours for a school or college, please email Grace Guntharp at gguntharp@li.lib.ms.us and explain why you want to volunteer.
At the end of your volunteer period, if you have volunteered satisfactorily, you may be entitled to a reference from the Youth Services Librarian when applying for a future job, college application, or scholarship.
